University of Maryland

University of Maryland copyMaryland Room, Hornbake Library, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.† ¶ Morocco binding. [PR1850 1896]

Unsigned modern crushed maroon morocco binding, with false raised bands and a gold tooled floral vine on the front cover. In a box.

Provenance: The book probably appeared in two Bloomsbury Auctions in 2001: 13 February 2001, lot 144, and 15 March 2001, lot 144. Bloomsbury’s website indicates that the book sold for £28,000 on 13 February; however, ABPC indicates that it did not sell until 15 March (for the same price). The view of ABPC is echoed by Antiquarian Book Monthly, May 2001, pp. 16–17. — Sotheby (New York), 11 December 2008, lot 180 [Property of an American collector] (unsold). — Sotheby (New York), 10 December 2010, lot 47 (sold to the University of Maryland for $46,875). — University of Maryland.

[Update, 12 May 2012: Here is a corrected version of the provenance: Bloomsbury, 15 March 2001, lot 144, £28,000. — Sotheby (New York), 11 December 2008, lot 180 [Property of an American collector] (unsold). — Sotheby (New York), 10 December 2010, lot 47 (sold to the University of Maryland for $46,875). — University of Maryland. (Bloomsbury’s website indicates that the book sold for £28,000 on 13 February 2001, lot 144, but according to ABPC and other sources, the catalogue date is an error.)]
